December at Our Space will be about slowing down, gathering together, and celebrating how far we’ve come

As we step into the final month of the year, we’ve been reflecting on just how much life, laughter, and quiet connection have filled the building this past month. November has been a busy one, but it has also carried that sense of community that makes Our Space feel like a home rather than just a place. As the days grew shorter, the warmth inside our walls only grew stronger, in conversations shared over tea, in creativity unfolding in our groups, and in the steady rhythm of people coming together simply because it feels good to belong.

Looking Back at November

November brought a wonderful mix of activity and connection, each part contributing to the growing sense of community that is taking root here. Our Parent Drop-In has continued to flourish. Each Wednesday morning, the tearoom is filled with the joyful sound of toddlers discovering toys, exploring familiar faces, and enjoying gentle play, while parents and carers take a breath, ask questions, share worries, and find support in one another. Cathy has helped create a space where people feel less alone in the early years of parenthood and the difference is already visible.

Our New Hope Club has continued to provide a friendly, safe space on Thursday mornings for people with learning differences, disabilities, or neurodiversity, along with their carers and support workers. It has become a place where people can relax without pressure, take part in calm activities, and chat in a way that feels natural and unrushed. The group’s steady growth is a testament to how much a gentle, welcoming environment is needed and appreciated.

Meanwhile, Knit & Natter has blossomed into a lively Friday ritual, filled with wool, homemade cake, and the kind of honest conversation that unfolds only when people feel at ease. Our Autumn/Winter bunting project added a lovely burst of colour to the room, with volunteers snipping, sorting, and stitching donated fabric into strings of bright triangles. These small creative acts have helped transform the room into a place that feels handmade and cared for.

Over in the tearoom, we have continued to gather regular visitors and curious newcomers, bringing together people of all ages to enjoy the place or simply share in the company of others. Whether someone stayed for twenty minutes or two hours, each visit added another thread of community here.

Self-Care Week was a meaningful addition to the month. Through gentle advice pop-ups and free blood pressure checks offered by Active North Yorkshire, we were reminded that wellbeing is not about doing everything perfectly, it’s about small acts of care that make our days easier and our minds calmer. The atmosphere that week was relaxed, curious, and open, which suited Our Space perfectly.

Toward the end of the month, we held our Christmas Table Top Sale, which was full of festive energy, homemade touches, and plenty of community spirit. The event was full of creativity and kindness, and it has left us hoping to build an even bigger and brighter Christmas event in 2026.

Thank you to everyone who visited, donated, or spread the word, your support helped create a truly festive day.

We also recently had the pleasure of welcoming officers from the Neighbourhood Policing Team, who spent the morning speaking with local residents, learning more about Our Space, and sharing their wish to be more present in the community. It was encouraging to see genuinely warm conversations unfold, and we hope this becomes a regular partnership in the months to come.

Celebrating Our Young People

November was filled with creativity, growth, and fun for ZONE @ Our Space. As ever, the young people brought energy and imagination into the building. We kicked off the month with toffee apples and parkin-making, much to their delight. This filled Our Space with the unmistakable scents of Bonfire Night. Later in the month, the group explored rhythm, language, and confidence through a spoken word workshop, where they tried new ways of expressing themselves and sharing ideas.

Throughout November, the leadership scheme continued steadily, with young people earning points through teamwork, helpfulness, creativity, and consistent involvement. We’ve seen them step into responsibility, encouraging each other, and discovering their own strengths. This is exactly what the programme is designed to nurture.

On 18 December, we’ll take a quiet moment to recognise those who have completed their leadership credits this term. We’ll keep the celebration simple with a warm acknowledgement of a job well done, before they enjoy their eagerly awaited reward activity. This will be a Rage Painting session at Linda Karslake Studios in the new year. They’ve worked hard for this moment, and we’re excited to celebrate with them.

Christmas Crafts & Carols

Monday 22nd December

Before we close for the festive break, we are bringing everyone together for a gentle, joyful afternoon of creativity and community spirit.
From 1 pm to 3 pm, Laura from Art Is My Career will be running a free bauble-painting workshop, perfect for all ages, whether you’re crafting with children, coming along with friends, or simply looking for a mindful moment for yourself.

After a short break, from 4pm to 6pm, Alice and our volunteers will guide everyone through making origami star hangings. These delicate paper stars are simple, calming to fold, and look beautiful when hung at home. We’ll begin carol singing at 5pm, filling the room with familiar tunes, soft light, and festive warmth. With mince pies, mulled drinks, and hot soup available, the whole event is designed to be gentle, inclusive, and heart-lifting. A lovely way to draw 2025 to a close.

Volunteer Celebration

Volunteers are the backbone of Our Space. They greet visitors, pour tea, support sessions, help run events, tidy the rooms, encourage young people, and keep the building feeling warm and welcoming. This year, we want to say a heartfelt thank you to every single person who has helped Our Space thrive.

On Tuesday, 10th December, we’ll gather for our Volunteer Christmas Celebration, an evening of food, conversation, and appreciation. It’s our way of honouring the time, care, and kindness our volunteers have offered throughout 2025. We truly wouldn’t be here without you.

A Gentle Note on Wellbeing

December is often portrayed as joyful and bright, but we know it can feel very different for many people. Behind the celebrations, this time of year can bring pressure, memories, loneliness, or emotional heaviness. At Our Space, we want to honour all of it, the joyful parts and the tender ones too.

Wellbeing doesn’t have to be big or complicated. Often, it begins with small moments of care within an ordinary day.

A warm drink.

A slower breath before stepping outside.

Sitting near a window to catch a little winter light.

Allowing yourself to rest.

Chatting with someone who listens.

Showing yourself the same kindness you would offer to others.

If you can, try giving yourself one gentle thing each day this month. It might be a walk, a quiet moment with a book, lighting a candle, writing down something you’re grateful for, or simply taking the pressure off when things feel too much.

If this season feels heavy, please know you’re not alone. There is always someone ready to listen.

🍪 Cosy Seasonal Recipes to Enjoy at Home

Spiced Biscuits

Warm, Simple, and Festive

There’s nothing quite like the smell of cinnamon and ginger drifting through the house on a cold December afternoon. These spiced biscuits are quick to make, inexpensive, and perfect for sharing.

To make them, cream together 100g softened butter and 100g caster sugar, then stir in 1 beaten medium egg. In a separate bowl, mix 200g plain flour, 1 teaspoon ground ginger, 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon, and a small pinch of salt. Combine the wet and dry ingredients to form a soft dough. Roll the dough into small balls or press it gently into shapes, then bake on a lined tray at 180°C (160°C fan) for 10–12 minutes, until the edges turn lightly golden.

Once cooled, they’re crisp, comforting, and delicious dipped into a hot drink, especially after a chilly walk home or wrapped as a small homemade gift.

Winter Warming Soup

A Hug in a Bowl

When the weather turns colder, a simple homemade soup can feel like the most reassuring thing in the world.

Chop an onion, two carrots, and two potatoes, and simmer them with vegetable or chicken stock and a pinch of herbs until soft.

Blend for a smooth finish or mash lightly for a more rustic bowl. It’s cosy, filling, and perfect served with warm bread.

Make a big pot and keep some aside for lunches.

Both recipes can be made for just a few pounds and are perfect for sharing with neighbours or popping in the freezer for the busy days ahead.

🎅 Christmas Closures & New Year Reopening

Our Space will close for the festive break after Monday, 22^nd December.
We’ll reopen, and all regular groups will restart from Monday, 5^th January 2026.

We hope the break gives everyone a chance to rest, recharge, and spend time with those who bring comfort and joy.

Looking Ahead to January 2026

The new year brings a sense of fresh possibility for Our Space. All groups will return as normal, ZONE will kick off the year with its reward trip, and we’ll share new volunteer opportunities and winter projects as we settle into January.

We’re excited for everything 2026 will bring, and we’re grateful you’ll be part of it.

Finding Warmth in Community this November

As autumn deepens and the air turns crisp, there’s been no shortage of warmth at Our Space. October brought so many moments that reminded us what community looks and feels like. From people showing up, getting involved, and creating something special together.

The month began with a real celebration as Gage Mix Radio officially launched from its new home here at 58 Flaxley Road. It was wonderful to see so many local faces joining in the excitement and to feel that sense of shared pride as Selby’s newest community radio station took to the airwaves.

Our Crafties Spooktacular during Half Term was another October highlight, with 30 children (and almost as many pumpkins!) taking part in a morning full of fun, creativity, and cake. The room was alive with colour, chatter, and a touch of glittery chaos - just how we like it!

Meanwhile, our Friday mornings have quietly become the heart of Our Space. Knit & Natter continues to be a place of laughter, shared stories, and the occasional new skill learned. It’s also where our community creativity shines brightest.

We’re now starting an Autumn/Winter bunting project to decorate the building. We’d love donations of materials in warm autumn tones, reds, browns, oranges, golds, and greens. Additionally, volunteers are needed to help cut triangles and stitch them together. Drop in on a Friday morning if you’d like to join the fun.

Across the building, our new pilots have taken off beautifully. The Parent Drop-In with Cathy on Wednesday mornings (9 - 10:30 am) has already started to gather a small, friendly crowd. It’s a space for a chat, a cuppa, and some early years support while little ones play.

On Thursdays, the New Hope Club has become a highlight of the week. A calm, relaxed, caring, and welcoming group for anyone who enjoys a slower pace in a supportive space, along with their carers and support workers. There’s always a warm drink, relaxed conversation, and gentle activities designed to help people connect and feel at ease.

October also saw the ZONE @ Our Space youth project continue to thrive. Young people have been carving pumpkins, sharing food, and building friendships. The group has reached a brilliant milestone with its regular participants and has begun planning its own creative community projects. They’re learning leadership skills, completing certificates, and proving that young people really can shape their own space.

This November, ZONE is all about creativity and comfort food. On Thursday, 6th November, we’ll be making parkin and toffee apples. Later in the month, on Thursday, 20th November, there’s a spoken word workshop where participants can explore storytelling, expression, and voice.

The building continues to grow busier each week. Our Community Tearoom is open every weekday from 9 am to 12 noon, with breakfast sandwiches, tea, coffee, and cake on offer.

Did you know? Every cuppa sold in our Tearoom helps fund activities and upkeep at Our Space, so when you pop in for a brew, you’re supporting your community too. ☕

We love our partnership with Working For Health, and it is great to have them based at Our Space. They are creating even more opportunities for people to connect over a cuppa. They are an organisation that specialises in employment support for people with mental health conditions.

Focusing on Self-Care

The week of 17th November is National Self-Care Week, and we’ll be marking it in our own Our Space way, with Advice and Information pop-ups in the Tearoom all week. Drop in to explore small steps for wellbeing, and don’t miss free blood pressure checks and advice on Tuesday, 19th November, thanks to Active North Yorkshire.

It’s a great reminder that caring for ourselves helps us care for others! Self-care can be as simple as slowing down, sharing a chat, or taking a moment for yourself in a warm, welcoming space.

Why not try a small act of self-care each day that week? Take a short walk, call a friend, or write down one thing you’re grateful for.

Looking Ahead to December

December is shaping up to be full of festive cheer at Our Space! We’ll be hosting our Christmas Table-Top Sale on Saturday, 22nd November (11 am–2 pm), a nice way to kickstart the season. Expect local crafts, home baking, hot dogs, tea, coffee, mulled wine, and a tombola or two. Entry is free and everyone’s welcome, so come along and join in the fun.

And save the date for Monday, 22nd December, when we’ll be hosting Crafts & Carols. A free bauble-painting session from 1 - 3 pm, followed by a creative carol singalong from 3:30 - 6 pm. We’ll be making origami decorations, enjoying festive tunes, and spreading community warmth to close the year.

Behind the scenes, we’re also preparing a Volunteer Christmas Celebration. Our way of saying thank you to the amazing people who give their time, skills, and heart to keep Our Space running.

🍰 Something to Try at Home – Sticky Parkin

Our young people in ZONE @ Our Space will be making parkin this month, but there’s no reason the adults should miss out!
Here’s a quick and cosy recipe to bring that Bonfire Night flavour home:

Ingredients:

• 200g self-raising flour

• 100g medium oatmeal

• 100g soft brown sugar

• 1½ tsp ground ginger

• 1 tsp mixed spice

• 200g golden syrup

• 100g butter

• 1 egg, beaten

• 100ml milk

Method:

1. Preheat oven to 150°C (130°C fan) and grease a square baking tin.

2. Gently melt the syrup and butter together in a pan.

3. Mix the dry ingredients in a bowl, then pour in the syrup mixture.

4. Stir in the egg and milk until smooth.

5. Pour into the tin and bake for about 1 hour until firm and golden.

6. Cool in the tin - it tastes even better after a day or two!

Perfect with a cuppa on a chilly day ☕

Did you know? The word parkin comes from Yorkshire and has been around since the 1700s! It was traditionally baked for Bonfire Night, and it keeps getting better with age (just like our community!).

Gage Mix Radio Grand Opening – Thank You, Selby!

On 4th October, we celebrated the official launch of Gage Mix Radio at Our Space.

A huge thank-you to everyone who came along, to Mayor Jack Proud for cutting the ribbon, and to Cray Bakes for their delicious cake donations. The atmosphere was great, the café was buzzing, and there’s so much more to come.

Expect podcasts, talk shows, and competitions soon from the Gage Mix team.

A big welcome to them as part of our growing community at 58 Flaxley Road.

As we wrap up our first month as a community hub, we want to take a moment to say a huge THANK YOU! 💙

From local community members who have walked through our doors to the organisations that have supported us to our amazing volunteers - both new and existing - you have made this journey so special.

A special shout-out to Alice, our new Coordinator, who has hit the ground running from day one! She’s been getting to know the community, supporting volunteers, and helping shape Our Space into a thriving hub. If you haven’t met her yet, pop in and say hello!

We also want to express our deep gratitude to our funders, including:

What an incredible start we’ve had! This past week, we’ve loved welcoming so many of you to our new community hub on Flaxley Road. From our Come and See event to Cake & Christmas Crafts, seeing the energy, creativity, and community spirit fill the space has been fantastic.

A Week Full of Community Spirit

🌟 On Tuesday, we opened our doors for the first time with the Come and See event. It was a joy to welcome so many of you to explore the space, share our hopes and dreams, and hear your wonderful ideas over tea, coffee, and cake.

🎨 On Wednesday, the hub came alive again with our Cake & Christmas Crafts event. Families, friends, and neighbours gathered to enjoy festive crafting, delicious treats, and lots of laughter. The energy and excitement in the room were heartwarming!

These events truly showcased what we hope Our Space Selby will become: a welcoming hub where everyone can feel at home, connect with others, and enjoy what our community offers.

A Huge Milestone: Building Control Sign-Off ✅

We’re delighted to share that the hub has passed Building Control sign-off, as mentioned in the Selby Times:

"The former derelict shop, which was purchased by Selby Big Local, has been transformed into a vibrant, community-owned and community-led space."

This milestone represents a key step in turning our dreams into reality, and it wouldn’t have been possible without the dedication of our volunteers, the support of Selby Big Local, and the generous funding from the National Lottery Community Fund.

A total of £300,000 of the £1 million National Lottery Community Fund grant was used to renovate the building, and the result is something truly special. Together, we’ve created a space that belongs to everyone.

🌱 Monday: Kicked off the week with a flourish! Weeding, conker collecting, and harvesting chives and tomatoes. Engaging in conversations and future planning made the day even brighter despite a bit of rain. Join us any day from 2-4 pm!

🌿 Tuesday: Another fruitful day at the #CommunityGarden in Selby. Bulb planting, weeding, and some quality relaxation and chats. The garden is gathering positive energy! 🌿💚😊

🌧️ Wednesday: Rainy afternoons won't dampen our spirits at the #CommunityGarden! Ho ho hoeing (no Christmas signs yet!) and singing in the rain kept us motivated. #LoveWhereYouLive #Gardening

🌿 Thursday: Cleared another area at the #CommunityGarden, prepping for new life! Bright red berries on the Holly tree added to the cheery atmosphere. Birds serenading us made it a delightful day. Open daily, 2-4 pm, all are welcome! 🐦🦋⚘🌲

🎨 Friday: Infused some colour into the #CommunityGarden with bunting, pom poms, and decorated rocks from the Selby Fun Day. These rocks hold the essence of what Selby means to our community. Open daily, 2-4 pm in October. Join us and contribute to the garden's vibrant spirit! 🌈🌿⚘

💧 Saturday: Water harvesting in full swing at the #CommunityGarden! Sustainability is key to our garden's success. Join us from 2-4 pm every day next week next to St James Church. #LoveWhereYouLive #CommunitySpace #Gardening

It has been a long time in the #MakingOurSpace Many frustrations and setbacks along the way to get the project to where it is today. 

Just a few weeks to completion and progress has been good this week. 

Thanks to Thread Architects. Andrew Daltry and Up for Yorkshire for their ongoing hard work, guidance and support in helping us to bring Our Space to be the place " Where Community Happens" and helping to make "Selby an even better place"

During October come along any day Monday to Sunday between 2 and 4 pm, whether for 5 minutes or 2 hours.

Everyone is welcome, come alone, bring a friend or the whole family.

Come and do some gardening or just to sit and enjoy the space.

Selby Big Local residents will be there each day if you want a friendly chat, no worries if you don’t. A free hot drink on offer if you would like one.

The garden is next to the main door for St James Church, at the far end of the carpark on Audus Street and across from Standering Hall.

Come to relax after shopping in town or take a break in your work day or after picking the kids up from school.
